Mayweather vs. Marquez: prelude to controversial decision
We examine Floyd Mayweather, Jr.'s and Juan Manuel Marquez's last three bouts and conduct a trend analysis to see how this fight might be scored by the judges, should this fight go the distance.
It appears that there are three primary reasons why this could be a close fight, if the scorecard has to pass through announcer Michael Buffer. First, based on their last three fights, Marquez and Mayweather have landed virtually the same number of punches on their opponents. (Granted, they are different opponents.) Secondly, Marquez has recently been a much busier fighter - with higher punch volume - but Mayweather's attack features more accuracy and power. Finally, Mayweather is a more accurate puncher; however, his well-placed bombs merely open him up for quick combos from the sport's best counter puncher.
Additionally, Floyd may be bigger than Juan Manuel, but Marquez has been a much more active fighter given that Floyd's last fight was back in 2007. Could ring rust be a factor?
